Retinize AR Apps
App design / UX / UI / Wireframing / Prototyping
Overview
During my time at
Retinize, I had the opportunity to be involved in a number of projects and tenders focused on Augmented Reality Apps for Mobile/Tablet.
My Contributions
My role was lead UX/UI Designer, applying design knowledge and skills to help RETìníZE better their AR mobile app experience. Duties involved research, wireframing, prototyping and testing. Certain projects I also had creative freedom on brand identity.

Walls Alive AR
Derry City Council
Walls Alive was a project in collaboration with Derry City Council, to engage local and international tourists with the history and culture of Derry / Londonderry in a new and exciting way.
Through Augmented Reality (AR) and GPS technology users are guided on a walking tour of the walled city, with virtual tour guides, encountering portal experiences of the city in past and present times.
The process
Walls Alive AR
The concept was inspired by the PokemonGO game app which had been released that year. The idea was users would be directed to a series of hotspots one at a time, and when they were within a certain radius of the hotspot they were able to unlock the AR experience before moving to the next location.
Working with the team and council we were able to create a user flow of the app, considering the user environment, device being used and technical requirements such as allowing access to GPS location and camera for the experience to work. An important consideration was also educating users on how to set up the AR experience, working with the lead developer to understand the set up, I was able to create an efficient flow of easy to follow on-screen instructions that would engage the user.

Museum Team
Ulster Transport Museum
Museum Team is an Augmented Reality (AR) app for Android and iOS that takes the family on an immersive treasure hunt around the Ulster Transport Museum. On this adventure they will experience characters from the past and the future, solving puzzles and collecting special items that reveal extra content and earn rewards. They can also unlock captivating AR content that can be accessed at home and shared with friends and family.
The process
Museum Team
The concept had similarities to Walls Alive in flow, users would be directed to a series of hotspots where they would activate an AR experience to meet various characters. Again, we had to consider how to prompt the user to quickly configure settings to allow the experience to work, such as allowing permission to turn on the camera and use GPS.
As a team we mapped user flows, had feedback sessions on wireframes and tested prototypes. Provided with a logo from an external Graphic Designer, I created a style tile and guidelines for our developers to follow which blended with the work of the other designer to create a brand identity and aesthetic UI for the app to help bring the idea to life.
